Can't claim your USDOT number in Motus

STUCK  Readout first. Full fix below. This page asks for nothing — no login, no PIN, no email.

What it means
Your Login.gov identity and your FMCSA company record have not been matched yet. Until FMCSA links the two, Motus treats you as a stranger to your own company — the claim/link button stays disabled or the number never appears on your account.
Whose side the fix is on
Mostly yours to start, FMCSA's to finish
First move
Sign in at motus.dot.gov and confirm your identity verification shows COMPLETE, then check that your Login.gov email is the same email FMCSA has on file for your company's official.
Attach first
USDOT number, government photo ID, and business ownership proof (articles of organization or EIN confirmation letter) — FMCSA asks for ownership proof on claim disputes, and a ticket opened without it restarts the clock.
Realistic wait
Straightforward claims post in days. Contested or mismatched claims are carrier-reported at several weeks in fall 2026; trade press documented 6–8 week waits for a supervisor review in the worst cases (Overdrive, Oct 15, 2026).
Escalation ladder
AskFMCSA ticket with ownership proof attached → FMCSA Contact Center 1-800-832-5660 → request supervisor review → (last resort, carrier-reported) congressional casework inquiry.

What's actually happening

Motus replaced the old FMCSA Portal in mid-May 2026, and every existing carrier — about 2.12 million active registrations (FMCSA Registration Statistics, Aug 28, 2026) — has to claim its record under the new Login.gov identity system. Only about 13,000 carriers claimed in the first week, so most carriers meet this screen for the first time at their next deadline.

The match is mechanical: Login.gov email + completed identity verification + the company-official email FMCSA already has on file must all agree. If any one differs, the claim stalls with no useful error message.

The fix, in order

  1. Confirm identity verification is completeInside Motus, check your profile status. A pending or failed Idemia verification leaves the claim button disabled — finish the verification first (see the Idemia page if it keeps failing).
  2. Match the emailYour Login.gov email must be the email FMCSA has for your company's official. If the record carries an old or former employee's email, the claim cannot match — that is the email-mismatch problem, and it is fixed by FMCSA ticket, not by retrying.
  3. Submit the claim from inside MotusUse the claim/link USDOT flow in your Motus account and follow FMCSA's published claim job aid. Do not create a second account with a different email — duplicate identities make the match worse.
  4. If it still won't link, open one complete ticketOpen a single ticket at ask.fmcsa.dot.gov with the ownership proof pack attached (see “attach first” above). One complete ticket beats five partial ones — each missing document restarts the review clock.

Read the label

Carrier-reported, not in FMCSA's guides: logging out, clearing the browser cache, and signing back in occasionally refreshes a stuck claim button after verification completes. Harmless to try once; if the button stays grey, it is a records match problem, not a browser problem.

Questions carriers ask about this one

Why is the claim button greyed out in Motus?

In nearly every reported case, one of three matches is incomplete: identity verification is not finished, the Login.gov email differs from the company-official email on the FMCSA record, or the number is already claimed under another identity. The button enables when the match resolves.

Can someone else have claimed my USDOT number?

If a former employee or a filing service claimed it under their own Login.gov, the number shows as claimed. FMCSA resolves this by ticket with ownership proof — the legitimate owner wins the record, but the review takes weeks, so attach proof the first time.

Do I need to claim my USDOT number right now?

Claiming is need-triggered: you will be forced through it at your next biennial update, insurance change, or broker vetting. Claiming early, while nothing is on fire, is the cheapest version of this problem.
