Case 03 · Motus problem file

Idemia verification keeps failing in Motus

STUCK  Readout first. Full fix below. This page asks for nothing — no login, no PIN, no email.

What it means
Motus will not let you touch a carrier record until Idemia — the identity-verification vendor FMCSA uses — matches your face to your government photo ID. A failed check is not an accusation; it is a photo-matching problem, and it blocks claiming, filing, and updating until it clears.
Whose side the fix is on
Yours to retry, FMCSA's to escalate
First move
Retry once, properly: unexpired government photo ID, bright even light, no hat or glasses, plain background, and the ID photo page fully in frame. Most failures are capture quality, not identity.
Attach first
For the escalation ticket: the exact error message or a screenshot, the type of ID used, and the dates of your attempts.
Realistic wait
A clean retry clears in minutes. Manual review through the Contact Center is carrier-reported at days to weeks in fall 2026.
Escalation ladder
Retry with a different valid ID if you have one → FMCSA Contact Center 1-800-832-5660 (request assisted/manual verification review) → AskFMCSA ticket with the error screenshots attached.

What's actually happening

Motus was built to lock down carrier identity after years of registration fraud — DOT estimated several thousand suspicious registrations under the old system. Idemia's document-and-face match is the lock. The trade-off is false rejections: worn IDs, glare, low light, and older ID photos that no longer match the driver holding them are the common failure pattern reported by carriers and service guides through 2026.

The fix, in order

  1. Fix the capture before you retryBright, even light; plain background; no glasses or hat; hold the ID flat with all four corners visible and no glare on the photo page. A worn or damaged ID that will not scan should be renewed — a check that cannot read the document cannot pass it.
  2. Use a different valid document if you have oneA passport and a state license are both government photo IDs. If one document's photo is old or damaged, the other may match cleanly.
  3. Stop after repeated clean failures and escalateEndless retries do not improve the match and can complicate the record. After several clean attempts, call the FMCSA Contact Center at 1-800-832-5660 and request the assisted verification path — the official route for carriers the automated check cannot clear.
  4. Document every attemptScreenshot the exact error and note the date and document used. If your case needs manual review, that log is what the reviewer asks for.

Read the label

A hard rule of this site: there is no legitimate workaround that skips or tricks the identity check, and anyone selling one is selling fraud. Every step above is a path FMCSA itself provides. If a 'service' offers to verify your Motus account 'for you' using their own login, walk away — that is the exact pattern FMCSA's 2026 fraud alerts describe.

Questions carriers ask about this one

Why does Idemia keep rejecting a valid ID?

The check matches a live face capture to the document photo and reads the document's security features. Glare, shadows, worn documents, and an ID photo that no longer resembles you are the usual causes — capture conditions fix most of them.

Can my office manager or dispatcher verify for me?

No. The verification must be the person whose ID is used, and Motus accounts are personal (Login.gov) identities tied to a company role. Sharing or borrowing an identity is how records get locked, not unlocked.

What if I cannot pass the automated check at all?

Use the official escalation: FMCSA Contact Center, 1-800-832-5660, and ask for assisted or manual verification review. Keep screenshots of the errors — the reviewer will want them.
